"How Congress And Trump Can Reform Taxes To Put America First"

This article is a similar connection to the type of globalization found in Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness”, when Kurtz uses Africa to his advantage and uses/abuses the Africans as his slave workers to excel his ivory company, to get rich, ultimately. This article is describing something quite similar but in a different subjective sense in comparison to Heart of Darkness. Lee states in the article that basically though globalization would benefit consumers as well as workers in the situation of this article: “our goal should be to harness globalization to the interests of American workers, to bring the global economy here rather than sending the American economy abroad. Under this framework, free trade would no longer be a mixed blessing for working Americans. It would work for all Americans, both as consumers and as workers. President Trump could even kick off this new era with a new trade alliance with Prime Minister Theresa May and our brave friends in post-Brexit Great Britain.”

As I read this article, essentially discussing the role globalization will take in Trump’s America, I cannot help but reflect on his recent executive order which has been nicknamed “Trump’s Muslim Ban”. This order blocks citizens from seven countries inhabited by Muslim people as a majority; Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, from entering the US for 90 days. Furthermore, the entire refuge program in America is suspended for 120 days in order to expand the vetting process for radicals and terrorists. Globalization is essential for keeping America running. As Mike Lee, author of “How Congress And Trump Can Reform Taxes To Put America First” states: “globalization simply extends capitalism beyond national borders”. Globalization is essential, and I am sceptical that cutting off seven countries from part of American expansion is at all beneficial; rather I see it as an act of racism. As I look at the reading “Imitation” by Chimamanda Adichie, I concentrate on how beneficial American living have been for Nkem and her children, specifically the opportunities and cultural experiences they have been able to participate in, and the idea that perhaps, had Trump been president while applying for their visas, they may not have been granted them. Although Nkem is not Muslim and is from Nigeria, this is a racial issue that potentially could expand to African countries as well. In fact, Nkem comments on how she and her housekeeper celebrated after she had achieved her full visa because of how difficult it was to receive, and I reflect upon, and am sympathetic for, the people who are, in reality, being denied these rights based on their religion. Therefore, with Trump’s emphasis on the importance of preserving and maintaining America, to put America first, by refusing access to Muslims and refugees, he is really hurting others without concentrating on the impact to those in need.

RachelMorrison, you touch on a really great point. I too believe that the Trump’s ban is essentially another way to express his racism. There is no scientific data that proves that people from these countries are radical terrorists, and actually many of the news stories that I have read actually argue the opposite (that it is more likely for acts of criminal activity to come from within America than from these countries). I actually just read an article about how a Canadian woman was held at the US border for 6 hours and then turned away because of her ethnicity. [I put the link to this article at the end of my post if anyone is interested in reading it]. This is just another way to prove the fact that this Trump ban is not just stopping people from certain countries from entering the US, but by stopping the stereotypical ‘certain’ people. It is absolutely ridiculous that people are now being denied access to America because of the colour of their skin or because of their ethnicity based on their appearance. As we have read in many instances in this course, life in America has been an amazing change to some of the character’s lives, and who knows what their lives would look like if they hadn’t been able to emigrate to the US. Refuge programs not only allow deserving people to come to America to ‘start a new life’ but it also saves people from terrible conditions that they are living in (ie; Syria). In Imitation, Nkem loved her life in America (other than the fact that she was separated from her husband). She didn’t complain about anything and actually mentioned the fact that her neighbours were extremely helpful (and sometimes too helpful, but they always had good intentions to help the new refugee family ‘fit in’). Her children were accepted and were treated and acted just like any other American child, they were all happy. It would be hard to imagine what could have happened to their lives if they had not been accepted into the US. Globalization is supposed to be an extremely important goal for all countries (the globe as a whole) to try and make happen, and with this travel ban, it is proving that globalization is not as important to some people and it is extremely unfortunate.
