Outsiders in America is meant to give voice to those who are in but (in their mind) not of America, such as historical outsiders (slaves, early Native Americans, persecuted racial and ethnic minorities), Native Americans now claiming tribal autonomy, separatist religious organizations, undocumented workers, visitors, visa students, and some socially marginal groups or individuals.
This theater’s Founders — those responsible for its most profound and seminal expressions — include Tecumseh, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Sui Sin Far, and Elijah Muhammad.
