Globalized communities in 2017
on: January 31, 2017, 11:23

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/01/30/15-best-cartoons-shared-donald-trumps-travel-ban/

Considering Trump's fight against globalization now that he has taken over as the new president elect, it's obvious he would come up in many conversations surrounding the topic. However it's also interesting to note the effects his actions are having on the formation of new globalized communities. It hasn't even been two weeks since his inauguration and already Trump is causing an uproar among many different groups in many different parts of the world. I for one could not fathom the numbers that were arising from the various marches aimed at protesting Trump's abortion and travel bans. Not only were those that voted against Trump in the US marching but people from all over the world, stretching as far as small sea-side towns in the Maritimes came together in solidarity against a man who has proven that bigotry and misogyny still have their place in American politics. However while these bans are a direct attack on basic human rights, there is a silver lining, and an ironic one at that. While Trump's second major act in banning the entrance of people from certain countries is a tragedy, what he has unintentionally set in motion is a ripple effect of globalization. These people from all over the world came together to form new globalized communities with the aim of demonstrating that we aren't separated by borders, religion, class or race but instead that we all belong to the same group of humanity. These cartoons that came up on my social media feeds are a testament to the fact that the world will always come to the aid of their fellow neighbours, no matter how far their separation might stretch.

I enjoyed reading your response because i appreciated how you gave both view points to the negative side of Trump as well as the positive. With the rules that Trump has already set in place for the ban of government funding for abortions as well as the ban to travel to Islamic countries could have torn the nation apart with hatred and war. However, like you have previously mentioned, the world is doing the complete opposite and everyone is coming together. With the help of social media, there was a nation wide Women's March that put men, women and children together to fight for their human rights and to demonstrate that Trump has no power over women's bodies. People have come together and globalization is even stronger than it was before with the help of Trump because his laws tried to break people apart when in fact they're just making the nation stronger by fighting together against him.

In some ways none of what President Trump is doing should be surprising anymore should it? His brazen style of politics places a huge emphasis on populism (something the American people have rallied behind) and has all but ripped up and tossed aside the old playbook in terms of how one campaigns, and deals with politics on a grand stage. This is why he is where he is now, his inability to temper himself to political correctness is something that resonated with the American people who see the last 8 years under the Obama administration as ineffective. My only true respect for him comes in the form of his ability to defy the expectations of naysayers and experts a like. Take former President Obama, he successfully campaigned on "hope" and "change" which propelled him forward and shattered expectations (also noted he was the first African American to become president) and changed American history forever. It takes something go from hope and change to apathy and frustration and turning it into a strength. So here's the question that makes me most curious. Why did apathy win over the people? He indirectly supported racist, misogynist, xenophobic, rhetoric and half the country didn't care. Not every Trump supporter, but a large amount of those who voted because they felt he best served their own self interests and anyone else (minorities) were of little concern. Finally, as we've now entered February and the full Trump administrative picture is becoming clearer (Islamic bans, the building of the wall, etc.) as the country continues to regress back in time. This is a HUGE problem. The only tool with which to voice displeasure and opposition is protestation (which is being ignored) and at least half the country don't even care. It makes me think, should countries continue to follow in the same footsteps as #BREXIT and the United States, countries like France (voting in April) for example, if they continue the latest trend of populism and vote in Marine Le Pen it will spell the death of the EU and Globalization almost certainly.
