According to their website, Planned Parenthood offers an array of free services, such as STI testing and treatment, contraception, cancer screening and prevention, pregnancy tests, and other treatments for both men and women. Statistics provided by Planned Parenthood show only 3% of the services they offer are abortion related: https://www.plannedparenthood.org/files/4013/9611/7243/Planned_Parenthood_Services.pdf
Sounds like a dream, right? Not to congress, who voted to defund Planned Parenthood on Thursday: http://www.refinery29.com/2015/12/98907/congress-vote-defund-planned-parenthood-truth.
Planned Parenthood provides services to people who sometimes can't afford them, for example, a mammogram can cost anywhere between $80-$200. Planned Parenthood offers it for free.
Many religious groups, primarily Christian, like to gather outside of Planned Parenthood clinics and protest against women who go in to get abortions. Some handing out flyers with graphic images of dead fetuses. However, one man in Colorado decided to take drastic measures against Planned Parenthood. On November 27th, Robert Lewis Dear killed three people and injured 12 in a 5 hour siege on Planned Parenthood. He has since been charged with first degree murder, and according to CNN, Dear was anti-abortion.
How does it make sense to save an unborn fetus by killing people?
Many feminists state that the protests have less to do with religion and more to do with what women do with their bodies.
Coming from Canada where most of the procedures offered at Planned Parenthood are free here, it's odd to me why so many people would hate Planned Parenthood. It all comes down to blindly protesting something without reading the facts. Many people believe that 90% of Planned Parenthood procedures have to do with abortion when it makes up only 3% of what they do. There are even Planned Parenthood locations that don't offer abortions at all. These misconceptions that are often thrown around can lead to serious consequences.
Even if people are against abortion, I can bet that they're not going to be the one raising that child when it's delivered. The child is probably going to be put in an orphanage while the picketers are still outside Planned Parenthood, protesting against the next woman that decides to spare her unborn child a future of foster homes. I am not necessarily pro-abortion, but I am pro-choice. I have no say in what a woman does with her body. Neither should the protesters, and neither should have Robert Lewis Dear.
