Poor Obama. Weighing innocent deaths on this side against innocent deaths on that side, like a god.
What he cannot appreciate is that, for those in the video, each of these innocent people killed by the Americans from the sky is truly a martyr, a shahid.
Martyrs are powerful symbols in any culture, but in Islam they are even more powerful, for two reasons. First, a shahid is actually a witness. When the innocent children die in the drone attacks they die as witnesses, testifying to the shahada: "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah."
And those who die in the cause of Allah, as fighters in jihad, are also martyrs and witnesses to the shahada.
If the survivors of such attacks in America called their lost relatives 'martyrs', you would say they were exaggerating, in a dangerous way. But here the word is right and very powerful. Imagine if everyone killed in 9/11 were considered a martyr, testifying there is no god but the Christian God.
Could something like this have been in Bush's mind?
And can Obama understand?

A moving and disturbing video, Geoff. But Mahmoud, is it not possible for those who interpret the Koran to soften its sharper edges a little, like those you are stressing here, in the cause of peace, not merely in the world but in the hearts of the Arabs themselves? The Christian Old Testament also is full of such eschatological formulas and imperatives--and God knows Christianity has shed its share of blood in the name of its all-loving God, but I'd like to think that centuries of needless suffering have softened the sharpest edges of that text, and I sometimes wonder if the Muslim faith might be a bit 'behind the times' in this way.
Certainly I would agree with your hypothetical case of 9/11--and there was a time (I think of the Crusades or the Inquisition) when such pitiless logic would actually have applied. But that time is past, thank God. And surely that is a good thing.

We must not forget that such Arabs still have souls to lose, not merely bodies, as in American materialism. And beyond the destruction of Arab bodies by these drones, is the fear--is it unreasonable?--of the destruction of their soul. American culture is like a narcotic cloud that wafts across the airwaves into every corner of the earth. To survive it, one must, above all, stay awake. Pain, and the memory of pain, are strong tonics for wakefulness.

We mustn't forget though, that sleepwalkers can also be keenly wakeful. They're just awake in a different (and more dangerous) world.

Call them sleepwalkers then, if you think that will help. Now what do you do?
