UPEI Establishes Teaching, Knowledge Garden to Help Indigenize Curriculum
on: March 22, 2017, 18:20

Article: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/upei-curriculum-indigenous-garden-1.4036089

This article highlights UPEI’s efforts to indigenize their curriculum. They believe this will add “new ways of knowing into the academy” and will help “support Indigenous students to and through post secondary education”. I think this article is refreshing because it is important for us to recognize additional cultures within our education system to ensure voices such as those within Indigenous communities do not go unheard. I have learned within one of my Indigenous courses that Indigenous knowledge has been diminished and not by a choice of our own but because of forced education, and federal policy, which I don’t see to be effective. Rather, I believe we must consider the importance of renewing our knowledge to ensure generations to come can benefit from it while also removing them from getting lost in the affects of modernization. I find it necessary to learn about Indigenous culture in order to understand the lifestyles of additional cultures apart from my own. It saddens me that many are uneducated on topics such as these, resulting in the history of many communities to be absent within the education system. This lack of information feeds into the whitening of the land leaving the education of additional cultures and beliefs left behind. This whitening of the land reminds me of Momaday’s House Made of Dawn and how it illustrates Native American stereotypes, such as Abel’s drinking. I strongly believe these stereotypes stems from the lack of education on this topic. Having Indigenous culture embedded in our education is a positive contribution to the education system, which allows for a more informed and inclusive environment.

Great post Erin, you touched on a lot of important topics that we addressed during our classes. I agree with you, as I also believe that education is the key in ridding the harmful stereotypes surrounding Native American communities. In reading your post, as well as the article you’ve made reference to, I was determined to see if other steps have been taken to encourage active learning about Native Americans. I found an article by Russell Rowland, a writer from Montana, who is also troubled by the lack of education about Native American cultures, “I was stunned to find that people still talked very openly about Native Americans as if they are all lazy, drunk and a drain on our economy,” (Rowland). As you’ve mentioned, there is a strong connection between these perceptions of Native Americans and the character of Abel. Connections could also be made to the article which outlines Trump’s problematic perception of “They don’t look like Indians to me” – highlighting the ways in which Euro Americans have a tendency to place Native Americans in a stereotype without acknowledging them as individuals. Upon this realization, Rowland teamed up with Adrian Jawort to create the Native American Race Relations and Healing Lecture Series. The Native American Race Relations and Healing Lecture Series includes panels and lectures which focus on Native American history, current issues, and potential plans for the future. Although these panels and lectures are hosted in Montana, I hope that Rowland and Jawort are able to expand their education symposiums to various areas.
