It's important to understand that representation in popular culture matters.
How many Native American characters can you recall in popular culture? Probably none. Fortunately, one publisher is trying to change the game.
Native Americans are very rarely prominent characters in film, literature, etc. and if they are, the work is considered to be Native American in genre.
Historically speaking, there has only ever been one Native American character in a popular culture that is considered to be a superhero. That superhero was Thunderbird from X-Men. In saying this, Thunderbird was never a prominent character and he was quickly killed off.
Author Jon Proudstar was not having any of this, so he has set out to publish the very first comic book that consists of entirely Native American characters. Proudstar feels as though the Native American community could really use a superhero character to reflect on. Native Americans have experienced so much abuse that it's important to give them a character (or several) that will remind them that they are stronger than those that rally against them.
Issues of Tribal Force will be available on several mediums and will be accessible from Native American community centres and schools.
