The War on Suicide
on: April 1, 2016, 19:09

In reference to an article in USA Today, according to the Pentagon it seems that at least 265 on-duty members have subjected themselves to suicide. This continues into a very unusually high trend that the U.S endures concerning its members that are related to some militaristic job. The military in turn has risen in its numbers of suicide victims, to at least double than what it was in 2001 – 2012, from 145 to 321 deaths a year. The mental capacity of many of these officers seems to be called into question. Even though the Department assures the press and public that these are merely statistics and that they are implicating many preventative measures, the numbers do not lie as long as they exponentially grow. The Department has also ensured the public that in time it hopes to produce an algorithm that will be able to predict which areas and what kind of soldiers shall be the next to fall prey to mental illness and undoubtedly suicide. Mental illness has been a burgeoning issue, and a curious one, since Edgar Allan Poe’s gothic and dark short story’s “Ligeia,” and “The Black Cat,” in which the protagonists inwardly struggle with their depression and wrong doings eventually succumbing to madness. These are all wonderful as psychological thrillers, but there are real world problems being dealt with by officers and soldiers that have truly been subjected to psychological tampering resulting in suicide. The Department should not be predicting these deaths; they should be preventing them with therapeutic programs as no one should reach such a point of “madness.”

Something that I have noticed in the media and in our course readings is that the treatment of mental illness appears to be gendered. Soldiers, especially, have this aura of being indestructible. They are strong, fearless, and unflappable. They are considered to be the strongest of men and the strongest of women. It almost seems like soldiers are too strong, too masculine, to need treatment. Seeing as they are the epitome of strong in American society, why would they succumb to mental illness? I have noticed this in acquaintances of my own as well. I know two men who have attempted suicide, and they were so ashamed of themselves that they were afraid to ask for help. They felt weak and emasculated because their brain chemistry was a little off. Women, it seems, have an easier time asking for help, and I think this is why PTSD/suicide victims in the military are often so silent about their suffering. The men in the military are the elite, manly-men, and the women, I think, work extra hard to show no weakness when compared with the men of their same rank. One of my female friends is in the military, and she has told me repeatedly how she feels that she needs to put on a kind of unbreakable front so that her superiors and male-coworkers do not think she is weak.
There is this false perception that mental illness is weakness, and I think this is a large part of why the male-dominated military is struggling so much with suicide. They do not want to show any signs of “weakness,” so they hide it.
If you look at Charlotte Gilman’s “The Yellow Wall-Paper,” this is a good example of what I mean. The narrator is a woman suffering from depression, and her illness is treated as a very normal, female problem. Further, she is infantilized and smothered by her gender, not the mental illness itself. Almost like “hysteria” is an accepted part of being a woman, and that is why they are so degraded by offensive gender roles.
I do think that the Department is actively trying to help soldiers and veterans, but that means nothing when the help is not being accepted. I think the problem here is the intense machismo that seems to be a large part of the American military.
