I think Canadian writer Michael Ondaatje's The Collected Works of Billy the Kid might make a good addition to the archives. The collection is based on the mythology of the western frontier, and the image of the American cowboy in the global imagination--Ondaatje says in the introduction that the work was conceived in reminiscence on his childhood fantasies about the cowboy-hero figure when he was growing up in Sri Lanka. The collection doesn't satisfy any fantastic impulse though, as the cowboy it presents us with in Billy the Kid is alienating, extremely violent and enigmatic, frustrating any attempt to vicariously experience the romanticized frontier. I think Onadaatje's presentation of an ultimately unrelatable cowboy figure speaks to an alienation experienced in trying to participate in or identify with the hyper-Americanized cultural objects generated by a saturation of Canadian culture with American media--I expect this alienation is experienced in other parts of the world, including America, as well.
