Obama and Trudeau: My Dream Team
on: March 10, 2016, 20:06

Let me just say...

I was absolutely mesmerized, and profoundly inspired by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's visit with President Barack Obama today at the White House! Both of these leaders are individually inspiring, with their eloquent words of change and hope, yet together I found it to be magical. I was also not the only one who felt this way, there was a palpable chemistry between the two, of a deep friendship.

When Obama first became President, I felt that the "American dream" was finding it's wings again, and Obama did not disappoint me. Now with Trudeau as my Prime Minister, I think I am now understanding for the first time what the "Canadian dream" is! America has always been a big brother to Canada, and today with seeing Obama and Trudeau together, that feeling was personified. I am so happy that Obama has taken Trudeau under his wing, knowing that Trudeau will be a wonderful leader like he was/is. Obama can impart his many years of skill and experience on his brother of the North, and solidify the relationship between the U.S. and Canada.

My only wish is that Obama could continue to be America's President for at least another four years! I am now a proud Canadian because of Justin Trudeau! I hope that Americans will hold onto the magic of today, and use it to defeat the Warlock/Troll that is threatening your "American dream"!

I completely agree. There was something about the event that elicited a feeling of comfort for me - which I think you have nailed, Freya when you say that there is a brotherhood between the two nations and their leaders; the whole thing felt very familial and genuine. It was about continuing to forage and strengthen the relationship between the two nations on a personal level. (As well, there is certainly something nostalgic about having another Trudeau as Prime Minister.)
My hope is that, like Canada’s choice to support a leader who holds values similar to a previous PM who lead Canada spectacularly, America will recognize what incredible work Obama has done and make the choice to elect someone who can lead and support them in the same way, instead of becoming a regressive power.
It is truly incredible how far America has come in the last century in terms of it’s battle with overcoming racism, so wouldn’t it be a shame (and a feat of absolute irony) to succeed America’s first black president with one who perpetuates racism and bigotry? Hopefully they can see something in Obama worth maintaining and elect someone worth continuing our Canadian/American bromance with!

Obama and Trudeau: they're everyone's favourite OTP; they're an unstoppable duo, they're Trubama (as the kids call it), and it seems as though both America and Canada cannot get enough of them. I, too, was taken aback upon watching and reading about Justin Trudeau's trip to American a couple of weeks ago. As Nicole put it well, the meet up between the two men, as well as the meet up between the two women, Michele and Sophie, felt utterly familial. Much like my fellow posters put it, I hope that this friendship and business partnership flourishes into something valuable and beautiful that will aid in the struggle to define greatness and pride for both countries again.
Additionally, I hope the Trudeau's liberal presence will have even a small influence on the people of America, especially with the upcoming election.

I also particularly enjoyed watching this video,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWI5-vWqcGc wherein a Vox journalist asks Trudeau if the 28% of Americans who claim they would move to Canada should Trump be elected as president, will actually do it. In this interview, Trudeau mentions that this isn't the first time Americans have threatened to move to Canada. He notes that this same trend happened with Bush's elections, and will most likely happen in the future. The difference between these two eras, though, is the influence of the internet. It seems as though various social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Buzzfeed, Vice, YouTube (most notably John Oliver's Last Week Tonight and Samantha Bee's Full Frontal channels) have changed politics forever, both in good and bad ways. Americans and Canadians alike are willingly receiving their news from these sources and formulating their political views as a result. Trudeau and Obama are very much aware of this and have been playing their campaigns around this idea, and quite well I might add. In an ideal world, I believe that Obama has had a significant amount of influence on Trudeau regarding modern campaigning and adhering to the young voters through the wonderful power of the internet. My wish is that Trudeau continues to apply these contemporary notions to his campaign for as long as he is prime minister.
