The Amanda Knox Case

The Knox case has interested me since I became aware of it several years ago. One of the most fascinating things about it is the way that it exposes American media censorship, and with it a prized assumption among Americans: that their country promotes "free expression" in a way the rest of the world does not. As this recent article explains, the American media shielded the American public from knowing important facts about the case, and relied on stereotypes about Europeans (and Italians specifically) as anti-American in order to defend a probably-guilty American citizen....

I felt right away that there was a strong bias in American reports on this case -- which is why I always tried to read the foreign media. The soft treatment of Knox (to put it mildly) is ongoing: there is a strong anti-Italian flavor to almost all the mainstream accounts which go 'in-depth' on the case.

The "Knox Case" (which would be better described as the "Knox/Sollecito/Guede Case," since there are actually three suspects) has been revealing of all kinds of cultural biases -- both American and European. Italians (and the British) loved to sensationalize "Foxy Noxy" (she does look like a femme fatale, so it was an obvious move) and play on the supposed violence lurking within all Americans; and the Americans loved to trumpet the supposed "corruption" of Italian justice (for they see it, I would suggest, through the prism of the Godfather movies). It's a nice "case study," anyway, of the fantasized understandings these regions have of one another.

Interesting point, Cindy, about the "supposed violence lurking within all Americans" (from a European perspective)!
I'm reminded of the (now quite popular) theory that Jack the Ripper was an American (a notion supported, apparently, by the widely shared assumption that there is something distinctively American about serial killing). David Schmid has an interesting section on this topic in his Natural Born Celebrities: Serial Killers in American Culture:

[The] belief that the killer could be American was widespread, so much so that future eyewitnesses tended to hear American accents and perceive American-style clothing in suspects [...] For example, Matthew Packer, the owner of a fruit and vegetable stall who had sold some grapes to Elizabeth Stride, one of the Ripper's victims, on the night she was killed, proved more than willing to fall in with reporters' suggestions that the man who accompanied Stride spoke "with a Yankee twang" and was wearing distinctively American clothing, which consisted of a long frock coat and a soft felt "wideawake" hat [...] (41)

The Ripper case seems to have been solved! (And the criminal is not an American!)

The most infamous serial killer in history has reportedly been unmasked, 126 years later.
Jack The Ripper stalked the East End in 1888 and murdered at least five women.
According to various theories, he was a member of the Royal family, a former prime minister or painter Walter Sickert.
Now, the latest theorist has stepped forward, saying the murderer was none of these but in fact, a Polish immigrant named Aaron Kosminski who was later committed to an asylum, where he died.
