Dennis Rodman and North Korea on: January 10, 2014, 18:52
The current circus surrounding the visit of American basketball star Dennis Rodman to North Korea, and his serenading of the homicidal Kim Jong-un, struck me as uncannily symbolic of, if I may speak broadly and loosely, the best and worst of the 'American character abroad.' The best: an American travels to a place where he believes he can do some good, with his luggage full of optimism and grand plans, and a certainty that he will be greeted, if not at first then at last, as a heroic liberator. The worst: an American travels to a place he knows little about, embraces evils he can barely identify, becomes mired in complexities he did not anticipate, is astonished to find he has spectacularly betrayed his original ideals, and limps home wondering what on earth happened.
