China`s America 2013
on: December 26, 2013, 00:09

A big clear window on China's America, from China's Pravda:
Note the (now) "old flashpoint issues" of human rights and Taiwan, the 'two equals' posture, and the fine balance of "what--we worry?" and menacing threat, just as Ai says.
This is the tone of the China Century, a subtle mix of Nazi/Soviet bravado and 'oriental' cunning--easily misunderstood, and never heard before, in a real enemy, by the West.
Take off your headset, America, and listen well!

I don't see any special "bravado" or "cunning" in this statement. At least not more than America, when it has the same message to send. China is simply showing that it knows the hypocrisy in America's positions, and that it will answer respect with respect, or not at all.
When Daly says "it remains to be seen if they are willing to adjust their policies, goals and behaviors" for the sake of mutual good relations, he knows that the greater adjustment must be America's, since it is she who must adapt to a new equal in China. China, and the world, has been "adjusting" to America for a long time. Now it is America's turn.

Tell me, does this:

"Washington has to understand that Beijing has the right to grow its national defense capacity in accordance with its own legitimate demands to protect national interests.

China has also assured the world repeatedly that it will use its power in a peaceful and responsible way. Therefore, demagogues should stop making a fuss over China's military development that is purely defensive in nature."

not remind you of anyone back in the 20th century, in the early '30's for example?

It is certainly odd how the author changes tone so abruptly when talking about the ADIZ, but we must remember that this is written in English, not Chinese, and subtle things like tone and implication are very easily lost over such a distance. China must learn to speak the language of a superpower, and here in a foreign tongue.

The Asian Century Institute has just published an interesting report on "America's Chinese Dream," which I thought I'd share...

The US economy is wobbling slowly forward. Europe is just plain wobbling. And China has moved onto a slower growth path.

But China's role in the global economy is also changing fundamentally, providing America with new growth opportunities, a "Chinese dream".

Over the past decade, China has emerged as a major international investor. China's outward investment grew on average 35% a year from 2005-2012. And with investment of $112 billion in 2012, this makes it the world's third largest investing nation after the US and Japan (excluding tax havens).

In the early stages, China's investment was led by state-owned enterprises, and concentrated in the resources sector. China's three state-owned oil firms -- China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC), Sinopec and the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) accounted for about one-quarter of China's outward investment by value from 2005-2012. Australia has been the largest national recipient of Chinese investment, just ahead of the US. Africa and Latin America have been important investment destinations too.

But the nature of China's outward investment is now changing. Private enterprises, rather than state-owned enterprises, are now playing a growing role. They are motivated more by tapping new markets, and acquiring new brands and technology, rather than natural resources.

The US has risen to the top of the list as the most attractive investment destination for such Chinese outward investment, despite concerns about protectionism in American markets, according to a recent report by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

What do you do when you have more American money than America?
Flood the market with it and you only hurt yourself.
Beef up production and try to sell to America, and it throws up barriers to 'protect' itself (from itself).
So, do what America has always done to others who were trying to protect themselves: buy America.
Make it a branch plant economy, with headquarters in Beijing.
