Thoughts on "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" as a film in 2018
on: March 14, 2018, 14:28

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been a story that has been brought to the Hollywood screen before. Taking into account of the controversial and political themes embedded within the story, how might a modern film of Huckleberry Finn be conveyed today? Do you think Disney was an appropriate platform to recreate the story of Finn? In 2018, are we more susceptible to addressing and consuming these political implications, or are themes like racism and slavery a topic that is still considered taboo? Would words and ideas be interchangeable like it is in the public school system? What can we deduce a film like Huckleberry Finn would do for the entertainment industry as activism is more prominent than ever?

Who would you cast as the the director or even as actors?

Looking foward to reading your responses! 🙂

I think a film version of Huckleberry Finn is a controversial topic on its own aha. Considering there is a huge debate on the book being censored or not, the movie would undoubtedly have to pick a side - to censor the N-word completely, or run with it to keep historical context and accuracy. But, let's say the film got the "green light" for a modern-day production somehow... I think it could be possible to portray the story in a less-controversial way, however, I imagine if Disney were to take control of production I'd assume the story would be really stripped of all its issues to make it PG-13 or "family friendly" as Disney movies usually are.

How the film would impact the entertainment industry is really dependent on which direction the producers take it (considering how much of the language choice they keep or strip away). I'm sure it would cause some sort of heated debate amongst movie-goers (especially nowadays since everyone is very critical of any film). Let's say Disney creates a PG-13 version of the story and its stripped of every heavy issue (while somehow keeping the main story intact) to keep it as "family-friendly" as possible, I could see it as being something that would be shown in schools as a basic education tool. On the other hand, a more accurate portrayal of the book (I can imagine it being definitely more controversial) could possibly be worthy of an Oscar if executed correctly.

This a really interesting prompt! I think it all depends on the demographic audience that the producers would be focusing on, introducing a bias. Is it for educational purposes? Who is deciding what to include and what not to include? Who’s perception of the narrative is presenting the work as a film? With all art, especially in literature, it is all up to interpretation, so looking at a company like Disney, there is definitely a focus on a happy ending that is not present in all narratives. Really interesting idea!

Thanks for the post!

I love this question and this post because it sheds a light on the controversies that Disney has participated since it began. The company is known for not discussing what they consider taboo themes such as sexuality, religion and racism, so it really brings to question whether or not they would produce an accurate and informative recreation of the story. They are also known for romanticizing these horrid stories with the prime example being the Pochahontus story, turning the genocide of indigenous peoples of America into a love story DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN. There are many red lights surrounding this production house so I don't think Disney did a good job nor should be responsible for a new remake of Huck and Jim's story. I do believe however that 2018 would do their story justice if produced by the correct people.

It is an interesting idea of having "Huckleberry Finn" as a movie. It would be interesting to see an adaptation in 2018, however, I feel it may still be difficult. As people have already pointed out, it is still considered a very controversial book, even to this day. Aside from some of the wording, I think the actual concept it is centered around-racism-would still be a bit uncomfortable for some. Racism itself, is still a very sensitive topic today, and people usually try to avoid talking about it. One thing I think that a movie on "Huckleberry Finn" could do, is develop more awareness of discrimination and racism. There is already a lot of awareness about the damaging aspects that it can bring and what we can do to prevent it, but a movie may help paint a better picture about this topic as well as give an insight into the historical views about racism. Changing the language may actually bring a similar controversy, like with the book, I feel. As for whether Disney would be a good source for a "Huckleberry Finn" movie, I honestly don't know. I guess it all depends on how it's done, but again it could bring controversy, as Disney is still primarily child-friendly, although they are experimenting with more "darker" themes in recent years. Overall though, I think "Huckleberry Finn" as a movie would be interesting, but probably controversial for the time being.

I think that having a film version of this controversial novel is actually a great idea especially because there is still so much race inequality that is going on in the world that it could help shed more light into an issue that needs to be talked about more. If this novel was ever to be made into a movie, Disney would need to make sure that make the right decisions when it comes to casting (especially since Hollywood in itself is experiencing race inequality in terms of representation) and including the N-word or not. When it comes to using the N-word, I feel that maybe it would be best to have two different version of the film shown in theatres (one that includes it and one that censors it) just to make sure that people are hopefully pleased with the depiction with the novel. I agree with previous posts in which they indicated that Disney sometimes “romanticizes” history or stories with deep meaning or tend to focus on very shallow things especially since Disney is usually targeted to children and “kids at heart”.
However, I think that by taking on the challenge to depict a novel into a film in which is important to the history of not only literature but to society itself, it will help Disney grow as a brand and at the same time, they are tackling the issue of race inequality that is still going on today in which they never do.

If Disney ever did make a film version of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", they would certainly need to make sure that is is appropriate for all ages. However, I think it would be very difficult to create a movie that is surrounded with so many controversies. In addition, Disney is known to make films that are very fantasy based and unrealistic and it would be interesting to see how they would handle a topic that is very "mature" or "real" in a way. Many different groups such as those who are literary critics and African-Americans would have clashing ideas and opinions about a film version of the novel. Even if there is no "Disney" depiction of Mark Twain's novel, there is still an ongoing debate about the N-word that he uses many times. Also, if Disney was to actually make a film version, many people would be very critical of the movie and will try to find many flaws. By creating a Disney version of the novel, I believe that it does romanticize race relations and if parents do decide to let their kids watch the film, I wonder if they will understand the historical context behind the film. In addition, it would put so much pressure on Disney, the director, the actors etc. especially since they need to do justice to Mark Twain's work.
