Power & Privilege
These days conversations of American President, Donald Trump seem to be a topic that, quite necessarily, should be followed up with a trigger warning. For many, this is rightfully so since Trump has proven himself to be a character that requires either a disclaimer or the password to his Twitter account to be changed. Perhaps take away all access to the internet altogether?

In addition to the various comments he has made in the past, Donald Trump's most recent remarks about Haiti being a "sh*thole country" has further continued to unearthed and ignite the fires fueling the racism debate in America. His actions have caused many to continue to questioning why Trump has yet to face the consequences to his actions. Unashamed of his words filled with blatant hate and racism--aside from public scrutiny--the President of the United States has faced no sever repercussions. Undoubtedly President Trump's reign illustrates privilege at it's best and what it looks like for great power to be placed in the wrong hands. Wielding his Presidency as if it were a rattle, Trump gives little regard to the conditions have those not sitting amongst the dominating 1%.

Curiously enough, my thoughts draw me back to Emerson. As we discussed in class, Emerson sided on the belief that freedom is universally available and exuded an intoxicating expression of optimism. It can be argued that Trump's attitude towards people and other nations fall in line with Emerson's beliefs...minus the optimism, of course. Failing to take into consideration their places of privilege, both Emerson and Trump fail to acknowledge that not everyone is dealt the same hand and has the 'advantage' of being a white man. Emerson writes that 'there is freedom for all' and, indeed I am sure that Donald Trump would be nodding his head to this (assuming that he knows how to read).

What are your thoughts?

Community of Outsiders
In Emily Dickinson’s poem “I’m Nobody, Who Are You?” (260) she addresses ideas surrounding identity, and what it means to be ‘the outsider.’

In the start of the poem, the unnamed narrator seems to come into contact with another unnamed character, and expresses that they need to keep their identities secret or else they will be found out and “advertised”. This poem takes on the idea that it's us against the world and in doing this, a sense of understanding and comradery is established between the pair who do not quite ‘fit in’.

This universal feeling of being the outsider is not a concept that is foreign (pun intended) to the American country. With the issues surrounding DACA, the poem seem to relate to the real world issues behind self proclaimed 'true American's' and non-American's. With the President having declared that all those who have entered into the country illegally be deported back to their home country, the Dreamers initiative is hoping to fight back against the policies which Donald Trump has put forth. With an immense disregard for the circumstances which may have pushed immigrants from their country and into America (whether it be war, terrorism, need for work, etc.) Trump’s policy maintains that despite any and all reasoning, if immigrants were not vetted prior to their arrival, they are here in, what he calls “our” country illegally and therefore are 'a threat'.

Emily Dickinson’s “I’m Nobody, Who Are You?” (260) has great relevance to the present day circumstances taking place in America because it too challenges authority and allows for ignored persons or outsiders to realized that they within themselves, are a community of their own and are in fact, not alone.

In Agreements with Mexico? (That's A First...)
It is no surprise for many to know that boarder security has been a massive deal to President Trump who, for months now, has been advocating for the creation of a wall to be built in order to prevent ‘illegal immigrants’ from breaking into the United States. However as of today, Trump has made a very big statement regarding boarder security and how America is going to secure the boarder; and it seems to be in connection with the situation that took place over the weekend.

A caravan of roughly 1,100 -1,500 people (most of them Honduras) was organized by Pueble Sin Fronteras and was making their way to the United States from the Southern boarder of Mexico. Pueble Sin Fronteras (which translates to People Without Boarders) states on their website that they are an organization that’s goal is to “accompany migrants and refugees in their journey of hope and together demand our Human Rights” Reportedly in Honduras, there has been massive political violence (atop of the general gangs and cartels in the area) which is causing many citizens to uproot themselves from their country and seek out safe havens like the States for new refuge.

Initially being a story that gained popularity by the media outlet BuzzFeed, the initiative triggered massive public response which later got picked up on Sunday by news stations like Fox&Friends, and was discovered by the orange man himself and it led to a slew of Tweets which he put out on the weekend. (I’ll spare you the nonsense and sum that) the gist of Trump’s argument was that “These big flows of people are all trying to take advantage of DACA.” and that “They want in on the act!” therefore Trump has once against affirmed (like the Dictator that he is) there will be “NO MORE DACA DEAL!”

Seemingly due to all the frenzied coverage and misinformed information being tweeted about this caravan with people, Mexico has announced that they are disbanding the caravan. Although they have stated that they will be granting Humanitarian Visa’s to a select few people (like pregnant women, people with disabilities and chronic illnesses, etc…), they have stated that rest will be deported unless they petition to stay in the country within a 10-30 day time frame from whence they arrived. So far, over 400 people have already been deported. Mexican Immigration officials have said in a statement that “under no circumstances will the government of Mexico support irregular migration” and as of today, April 3, 2018, President Trump has stated that he is in favour of this decision (which is a first, since he has always been in opposition of Mexico and their people). When asked to give a response during a luncheon, Trump said that he respects what Mexico has done and admires their laws, which are very powerful and very strong…

To me I find that there are just so many things wrong with this story. As we have discussed over and over, for centuries, America has pushed the narrative that it is a land of freedom and opportunity; however has shown in its actions that it is a place for freedom and opportunity (for a select few people)  in fine print…

The government neglects to acknowledge that the country has flourished, and continues to flourish with the help of immigrants who pay taxes and continue to work the underpaid/laborious jobs (that many American’s tend to overlook or refuse to take on themselves, might I add). The argument that ‘they are stealing our jobs’ is a false narrative which seriously needs to stop being perpetuated because CLEARLY the ‘our’ in this scenario is not referring to Blacks, Hispanics, Indigenous peoples, etc…

To me, this (among many examples we have seen in the news and heard from people’s testimonies) behaves as the clear attempts for an erasure of diversity in America. First and foremost, Trump’s tweets illustrate exactly how little the President knows about DACA and what it is. For those who are unfamiliar, DACA is supposed to be about the people who were brought into the country when they were kids who ended up being here illegally (which are at no choice of their own)…not new people entering into the country. Thus this argument does not hold water (let alone even make sense to the situation). What people have to understand is that many people are fleeing their countries due to wide scale violence that is running rampant and affecting the lives of many innocent citizens.
