Is Globalization A Postmodern Form Of Imperialism? – Analysis

Dr. Mohamed Chtatou released an article, “Is Globalization A Postmodern Form Of Imperialism? – Analysis,” which touches on many important topics and themes we have addressed through our Literature and Globalization course. Chtatou explains that Americans have used communication technology (i.e. internet, television, and radio) as a method of delivery for globalization. Furthermore, he outlines that technology is used as a ‘subliminal weapon’. Whereas imperialism of the 18th and 19th century was more explicit, Americans use technology use technology to send out subliminal messages containing Western and/or Catholic ideals. Chtatou credits these subliminal messages for inducing depression and drug addictions in those that cannot attain the lifestyle of the ‘rich and famous’. Later in the article Chatou describes globalization, “It is de facto an American vision and blue print of how the world should be and ought to function, irrespective of difference of culture, belief and geographical location. It is a consumer model based on capitalism, maybe with imperialistic connotations. This model is not proposed to the rest of the world to choose or reject, it is subliminally imposed and thus adopted whole-heartedly with no resistance whatsoever,”. This idea of globalization is heavily reflected in Shteyngart’s novel, Super Sad True Love Story. For example, in the emails the ‘Globalteens superhints’ function as subliminal messages which tell users how they should communicate – by pictures instead of words.

I believe that Western powers and America in particular, have used globalization as a means to spread its ideals of neoliberalism to developing nations. During colonial times, European powers would use 'hard power' to spread their own philosophies unto their colonies with their military might. Today this colonization comes in the form of 'soft power' as in using economic might to influence policies in developing nations for their own gain. Western nations hold great power over these developing nations by threat of economic sanctions or the stopping of foreign aid which they need desperately. This means that many countries are forced to give into unfavorable trade deals with these nations that hinder their own independent economic development. These countries also suffer from cultural imperialism when they do accept aid as it often comes with the knowledge that they are exposing their citizens to Western ideals in the form of developmental aid. For example, when programs such as One-Laptop-Per-Child donate laptops to the poor in developing nations, it is under the guise of educating the poor in the hopes that they will learn and thus create their own developmental plan, but really these laptops are loaded with Western software that access mostly Western websites. Even to access the internet, developing countries are forced to contract Western companies to build the infrastructure that accesses the network.
