The Credibility of Women

While reading Susan Glaspell's play "Trifles," I was left thinking about the ever recurring Republican Debates on CNN. It seems that Donald Trump is constantly making headlines on the news or on Their America. Why? Why would Glaspell's play remind me of Trump and his goal of become president?

As it seems, in this case, nearly a century has not changed in this mentality since "Trifles" debuted in 1916. While I speak of the next United States president, the play revolves around a murder. Moreover, Glaspell's one-act play is about women solving a case while the men (a court attorney and a sheriff) frolic around the house speaking sexist remarks, that there was "something more serious than preserves to worry about" in the kitchen.

The women are discredited and discarded in the Wright house where a murder has been committed, and the men focus on themselves being capable enough to crack the case.

Why Trump? Why politics? For those who do not know, the winner of the Republican debates must face the leader of the Democratic party. Humour aside, who is the Democratic party? Moreover, who is the face of said party at the moment. With all this coverage on Donald Trump and Jeb Bush, would anyone know that Hillary Clinton is running for president as well? Furthermore, does anyone know that there is also a Republican woman - Carly Fiorina - running too?

Look at the positioning of the candidates at the latest Republican Debate. We see Rand Paul and Mike Huckabee on the left, Donald Trump and Jeb Bush in the centre, and John Kasich and Chris Christie at the end of the line. Where is Fiorina? She is third-from-last next to Governor Kasich.

My post leads to ask: Why, if we say that women matter - and they do - are they continuously subjugated to men and their entitlement? Why isn't Florina in the middle with heavy-hitters Trump and Bush? Why is there no coverage on Hillary Clinton, but coverage on celebrity Donald Trump? What does this have to do with "Trifles?"

In short, it's to give women the chance they deserve. Having a black president was one milestone that the USA is still "recovering from," in their words. To have a woman president would just be absurd! No? Don't think so? Neither do I.

In my opinion, just as the women in "Trifles" cracked the case simply without the aid of men, I believe having a woman president is the change America needs. If the women in Glaspell's play could solve a murder without having any aforementioned knowledge of the subject or have degrees in detective-work, Hillary Clinton - experienced political figure and wife of former President Bill Clinton - could "solve" America with her eyes closed. Only time will tell if Clinton will get the coverage she deserves.

The word patriarchy is a staple term in feminist dialogue and, simply put, that is the answer to this question. America has been and continues to be a patriarchal and misogynistic society, despite claims of achieving equality of the genders.

As I read "Trifles," Verizon's Inspire Her Mind commercial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP3cyRRAfX0) appeared in my mind. This commercial depicts a young girl with a passion for science, yet her interest in the science field of academia is dismissed and she is told to prioritize her appearance, as women generally are told that their value depends on how physically attractive they are. This ties into the misogynistic comments that Trump has made. Merely searching "Donald Trump Misogyny" in Google results in numerous collections of each and every demeaning remark he has made regarding women - his daughter in particular! Even his own flesh and blood is not off limits from comments about his daughter having "the best body" and made a "tremendous amount of money" due to being sexually attractive. (http://www.mediaite.com/online/donald-trump-wont-stop-joking-about-banging-his-daughter/)

Linking the commercial to "Trifles" - the women of the play have clearly not been afforded the same opportunities as their husbands. They are not court attorneys themselves, they are merely wives. But it is the mere wives that conclude the story; it is mere wives who decipher the mystery of the murder. The fact that they have not been taught or studied law remains irrelevant - for two reasons. The first being that they were able to solve the murder regardless of their education, the second being that even if they had been educated, they would still be dismissed by the men due to their gender. "Trifles" wonderfully illustrates the misogynistic society that America has been and still continues to be to this very day.

I'm really fascinated by your mention of Carly Fiorina, particularly because I had never heard her name before reading your post. This further illustrates the ways in which America dismisses women and uplifts men, regardless of how horrid their agenda may be. But one sentence you wrote strikes me especially:

"Hillary Clinton - experienced political figure and wife of former President Bill Clinton - could "solve" America with her eyes closed."

Could it not be argued, then, that the reason people are aware of Hillary Clinton is merely because of her last name? Is Hillary Clinton simply known for being the wife of Bill, and if she had not had any relation to him, would her name still be known? Or would she remain in the shadows, just as Carly Fiorina?

I thoroughly agree with the above posts on the subject of the credibility of women. Unfortunately, America has become accustomed to relying on the all-powerful opinions of men while subjugating the opinions of women. The presidential election is indeed an example of that. It shows that even with the feminist progress that has occurred since the time in which Susan Glaspell wrote her play "Trifles", America is still rampant with inequality between men and women. Hillary Clinton has made headlines in this election somewhat on the simple basis that she is a woman. I think the attention paid to her is somewhat focused more on her gender than on her political ideas. This is a sad idea. We shouldn't live in a world where it is fascinating and ground-breaking for a woman to run for president. This should not be outside of the norm. While Hillary is being celebrated for her breakthrough into politics and the presidential race, people are also celebrating the fact that this contributes to breakthroughs for women. As encouraging as Hillary is, and as proud as I am for this "breakthrough" for women, I think it's sort of sad that in 2015, the idea of a female president is still unusual. As Glaspell shows in "Trifles", women have intellect that is worth notice. But men often overlook this intellect simply on the basis of gender. In a way, society is still stuck in this mindset. Women do have more opportunities and an impactful voice, but there is still the persistent view that women are not able to achieve things at the level that men can. And this is simply unfair for women like Hillary Clinton, who must fight even harder to have their voices heard in fields dominated by men.
