I don't have first-hand experience with an American spouse, but know a little of the topic through some close friends. The amusing article below, nominally on Paltrow and Martin, seems fitting for 'Their America'!

As news of the Gwyneth Paltrow/ Chris Martin split sinks in, it’s clear which half of the couple will get more press sympathy. Gwyneth is a Hollywood superstar with a megawatt smile, bewitching charisma, and a figure so perfect it could drive a sculptor mad. Chris Martin plays the piano at a school-play level, looks a bit sad, and displays all the animal magnetism of a Carphone Warehouse.
The media picks sides, and it won’t be his. So who is going to stick up for poor old Chris? Marrying an American can be absolute torture (I have eight years experience and counting). Let’s run down some of the awful attributes that Mr Martin had to endure for 12 long years:

Obsessed with Mexican food
For some reason, Americans believe that the constant and dirt-cheap availability of Mexican food is a human right. Tell them there is nowhere to get an affordable burrito in, say, Merthyr Tydfil, and they will gape in shock, like you just sang the national anthem in Klingon.

How very “Eurocentric” of you, Tom Cowell.

Tom Cowell, a "long-serving British husband to a gorgeous American woman", discusses the media’s tendency to choose sides on issues regarding celebrity marriage split. More specifically, Cowell suggests that most of the public’s sympathy will be directed towards Paltrow; mostly, Cowell explains how this is because Chris Martin negates to have his former wife’s “megawatt smile, bewitching charisma and perfect figure”. In his own way, Cowell is supporting Martin, as he believes no one else will. In the list of the pitfalls that come with marrying an American woman, Cowell proceeds to make humour out of the situation. He, too, has been married to an American woman for 12 years. Thus, in one sense, the article becomes a way for Cowell to celebrate the british knack for comedy.

Alternatively, on a lesser note, Cowell’s article does damaging work. Overall, he contradicts his point about women as targets for sympathy by redistributing blame and criticism on to women once more. How very original, sir! (insert eye role)

*Sigh* I bet Cowell would remind me to lighten up.
